The seventh edition of the Bayern Youth Cup Nigeria has officially kicked off at the Inspire Sports Complex (NITEL Field) in Lagos, bringing together twelve youth teams from across the country to compete for glory and a potential pathway to professional football.
The prestigious youth tournament, backed by German giants Bayern Munich, provides a platform for young talents to showcase their skills in front of international scouts and renowned football experts. Among them are Lars Weichert, Bayern’s Head of International Youth Programs, and Diego Contento, a UEFA Champions League winner and Bayern legend, who is visiting Nigeria for the first time.
Contento, a former teammate of David Alaba, adds star power to the event, while Weichert – on his fourth visit to Nigeria – continues to deepen Bayern Munich’s commitment to youth development in the country. His efforts have been instrumental in establishing initiatives like the Bayern Youth Cup, Bayern Camps, the Bayern Global Academy, and the Bayern World Squad.
“This project has helped develop professional players like Victor Orakpo, Daniel Francis, and David Emmanuel,” said Victor Edeh, Head of Bayern Youth Cup Nigeria. “We are thrilled to work with the next generation of Nigerian footballers and support their journey.”
The tournament began with intense training sessions, offering the players a chance to assess their skills ahead of the group stage, which begins tomorrow. A press conference will also be held, followed by match fixtures leading up to the grand finale on Saturday, 21 June 2025.
The twelve participating teams are: Alpha FC, Rangers FC, Inspire SA, Utmost FA, Dan Alkali FC, Beta FC, Select FC, STL FC, Ablaze FA, Femi Gbaja FA, TFA Squad, and FC Bako.
The Bayern Youth Cup Nigeria continues to serve as a vital scouting ground and a beacon of hope for aspiring young footballers dreaming of making it to the world stage.
