Enyimba Football Club has announced the passing of former goalkeeper and Togolese international, Bassa Sabirou Djeri, who died at the age of 37 after a brief illness.
The news has plunged the club, supporters, and the wider African football community into mourning. Djeri, remembered for his professionalism and quiet leadership, made a lasting impact during his time with Enyimba and across a distinguished career on the continent.
Born on 17 June 1987 in Bassar, Togo, Djeri began his career at Gbikinti FC before earning 15 caps for the Togolese national team, the Éperviers. His performances between the posts were characterised by composure and consistency, gaining the respect of teammates and opponents alike.
Djeri featured for Cameroon’s Coton Sport and later joined Nigerian giants Enyimba FC, where he was known for his humility and influence within the squad.
"We are devastated by his demise. Bassa Djeri was a gentle giant—a man of incredible integrity, discipline, and class. He will always be remembered as a valued member of the Enyimba family who served the badge with pride and honour," the club said in a statement.
Tributes have poured in from across Africa, including messages from the Togolese Football Federation, former teammates, and fellow clubs, honouring a player who not only excelled on the pitch but also carried himself with grace and dignity throughout his career.
