The Chief Executive Officer of KMK Foundation Academy, Kingsley Morrison, has criticised the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Sports for sidelining sports icon John Ekpeyong in the recent appointment of board members for Akwa United and Ibom Angels.
Speaking in an interview, Morrison expressed deep disappointment over what he described as the continued neglect of Ekpeyong, a man he believes has given decades of dedicated service to the growth of sports in the state.
John Ekpeyong, a former footballer and coach, was the first manager of Akwa United and played a key role in building the foundation of the club. He also guided the state football team to several notable victories and has remained committed to nurturing talents and promoting sports across Akwa Ibom for more than 20 years.
Despite these contributions, Ekpeyong was not considered for a role in the new boards, a decision Morrison said raises serious concerns about merit and fairness in the selection process.
Morrison urged the state government to recognise Ekpeyong’s wealth of experience and make better use of his expertise to drive the state’s sports development. He warned that sidelining proven professionals could slow the progress Akwa Ibom has made in sports and damage its growing reputation.
He called on the Commissioner of Sports and other stakeholders to “put personal interests aside and focus on what truly benefits sports development in the state”, stressing that Ekpeyong’s inclusion would strengthen both Akwa United and Ibom Angels.
According to Morrison, recognising and engaging individuals like Ekpeyong is essential for sustaining the momentum of sports growth in Akwa Ibom and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
