Lobi Stars Unveil Coach Abubakar Bala, Set Sights on NPFL Return

Lobi Stars Football Club have officially unveiled Coach Abubakar Bala as their new Technical Adviser, marking the start of a rebuilding process aimed at guiding the club back to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The unveiling took place in Makurdi, where club chairman Dr Philip Nongu, who also serves as Acting Commissioner for Youth, Sports, and Creativity, addressed sports journalists alongside board members. Dr Nongu revealed that the new leadership inherited both players and staff, as well as a two-month salary backlog, from the previous administration. He condemned acts of sabotage that had damaged the club’s image last season but assured supporters that lessons from their relegation have been learnt.

He outlined measures already in place, including overhauling the technical crew, recruiting young and indigenous talents, restructuring salaries, and improving welfare packages such as match bonuses and feeding allowances. The chairman also gave updates on renovation works at the Aper Aku and McCarthy stadiums, adding that Akume Atongo Stadium would serve as a backup home ground if needed.

Coach Bala, who previously led Lobi Stars to a second-place NPFL finish, promised to build a competitive squad where selection would be based on merit and quality. Known for his attacking style of play and ability to nurture young talents, his return has sparked optimism among the fans.

Supporters expect Bala to bring stability after years of coaching changes, rebuild the squad following key player departures, revive the team’s winning mentality, and restore an entertaining brand of football. The club’s management have set ambitious targets for the new season, including winning the NNL or The President Cup, as part of their long-term plan to return to the NPFL.

The unveiling ceremony also featured the signing of Bala’s contract and a minute’s silence in honour of Akin Olowokere, Assistant Coach of Shooting Stars, who passed away earlier in the day during training in Ogun State.

With renewed leadership and a clear vision, Lobi Stars are aiming to bring back the glory days under Coach Bala’s guidance.
