Bayelsa United began their 2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Shooting Stars in Ibadan on Sunday.
The match, held at the Lekan Salami Stadium, saw both teams fielding new managers. Shooting Stars were led by former Ikorodu City coach Nurudeen Aweroro, while Bayelsa United reunited with former Bendel Insurance gaffer Monday Odigie.
The Prosperity Boys’ lone goal came in the first half courtesy of Kehinde Malik Lawal, who rose highest to head home against the run of play. Despite Shooting Stars mounting several attacks, Bayelsa’s defence, marshalled by captain Gabriel Biriduba and goalkeeper Clinton Andy, held firm to preserve the lead going into the break.
In the second half, Bayelsa United pushed for a second goal. Striker Emo James came close twice, including a narrow miss after rounding the Shooting Stars goalkeeper. Midfielder Edwin Ayiba later replaced the injured Ofem Nneoye and helped to maintain control in midfield.
Speaking after the match, coach Odigie praised his players for sticking to the game plan. “The boys played according to instructions and were rewarded with the result,” he said, as quoted in the club’s statement. He also hinted at potential signings to strengthen the squad, noting that the team is currently short on numbers.
Bayelsa United will next host newly promoted Barau FC at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa as they aim to make it two wins from two in their opening fixtures. Meanwhile, Shooting Stars SC will visit Bendel Insurance in Benin as they seek a redemption from the open day defeat in Ibadan.
