Nigeria’s Super Eagles arrived in Bloemfontein on Sunday evening to a delightful reception ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash.
The delegation was warmly received at the airport by Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, His Excellency Tope Ajayi, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Sir Adeyinka Adeboye. They were joined by top officials of the National Sports Commission, including Alhaji Salihu Abubakar, Barr. Musa Amadu, Dr Kehinde Ajayi, Mr. Ebidowei Owiefie and Mr. Seyi Johnson.
The team touched down at Bloemfontein Airport at 6.25pm local time, following a three-and-a-half-hour flight from Luanda, Angola. The chartered ValueJet aircraft had earlier flown from Uyo to Luanda for refuelling.
Members of the Nigerian community in South Africa, led by their president, Mr. Smart Nwobi, turned out in large numbers. Dressed in traditional attire, they welcomed the squad with drumming, singing and dancing.
The Nigerian delegation was led by the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau. Also present were the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadu, NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, former Super Eagles captains Nwankwo Kanu and Victor Ikpeba, as well as other stakeholders and media representatives.
A total of 22 players made the trip alongside the technical and administrative staff. Forward Victor Osimhen was the only absentee, having sustained an injury during Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to hold their official training session at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein at 6pm on Monday (5pm Nigeria time).
