ASEC Mimosas have made history by winning the 5th edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU-B qualifying tournament.
The Ivorian champions secured the regional crown on Friday, September 5, after defeating Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens in a dramatic penalty shootout. Regulation time ended 1-1, and extra time failed to separate the sides, leaving the contest to be decided from the spot.
In a tense shootout, ASEC Mimosas held their nerve to triumph 8-7, sparking celebrations from their supporters. The victory not only earned them the trophy but also secured a coveted spot in the final phase of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Earlier, Ghana’s Police Ladies and Burkina Faso’s USFA competed for third place. After a stalemate in regular time, USFA claimed the bronze medal with a 5-4 win on penalties.
ASEC Mimosas’ historic triumph marks the first time an Ivorian club has won the WAFU-B qualifiers, highlighting the growing strength of women’s football in Côte d’Ivoire. The team now turns its attention to the continental stage, representing the WAFU-B zone in the upcoming CAF Women’s Champions League.
