Rivers United head coach Finidi George has urged his players to approach every fixture with a must-win mentality if they are to stand any chance of lifting the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title this season.
Speaking to Footballrover after Tuesday morning’s training session, the former Super Eagles manager delivered a blunt message to his squad.
“If you want to win the league, these are the matches you must win. If you don’t lose, at least pick a point. Let’s put our minds in the game. If you do well in the first round, you’ll have the chance to win the league,” Finidi said.
He also underlined the physical and mental demands of the NPFL, citing long journeys as a major challenge. “Nigerian league is one of the toughest in the world. There are so many reasons, and this travelling is one of them,” he added.
Beyond tactics, Finidi advised his players to take their health seriously, emphasising good nutrition, vitamins, and recovery. “It’s your body; take care of it,” he cautioned.
Rivers United vs El Kanemi Warriors: A Key Clash
The Pride of Rivers began their 2025/26 NPFL campaign with a 1-1 draw against Remo Stars before securing a narrow 1-0 win over Kwara United.
El Kanemi Warriors also made a bright start, defeating Bendel Insurance 2-0 at home and earning a goalless draw away to Ikorodu City. Both clubs sit on four points, making Sunday’s fixture a crucial test of their title ambitions.
With El Kanemi banking on their Maiduguri home advantage and Rivers United keen to avoid defeat, the match promises to be a tightly contested battle.
