Nasarawa United edged Wikki Tourists 1-0 in a tightly contested northern derby on Sunday to climb into the top five of the Nigeria Premier Football League table.
The decisive moment came in the 37th minute when youngster Garba Mohammed capitalised on a defensive lapse to fire past the Wikki goalkeeper at the Lafia City Stadium. The victory ensured back-to-back home wins for the Solid Miners, who now sit fifth with seven points from four matches.
Head coach Mangut Mbwas praised his side’s discipline and tactical execution.
“We tried to stop them from circulating the ball and one of our counter-pressing moments gave us the goal,” Mbwas said. “The league is still in its early stage, and we will keep working hard ahead of our next game against Bayelsa United.”
Goalscorer Mohammed expressed delight at his contribution and revealed his personal ambitions.
“I am very happy to score the only goal today. My target this season is to be among the top scorers and assist providers, while helping the team secure a continental ticket,” he said.
Despite the loss, Wikki Tourists head coach Abdu Maikaba commended his players’ effort in what was their first defeat of the campaign.
“Credit to Nasarawa United, they took their chance well. But my boys fought until the end. We’ve identified areas to improve and will work on them ahead of our next game in Katsina,” Maikaba stated.
The match was witnessed by top dignitaries, including the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Kwanta Yakubu, and other officials.
Nasarawa United travel to Bayelsa United next weekend, while Wikki Tourists will seek to bounce back away to Katsina United.
