Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has made history by gifting Bendel Insurance 10 million naira despite the team losing 3-2 to Enyimba in their NPFL Matchday 5 fixture in Aba.
Otti became the first Nigerian governor to extend such a gesture to an away side, setting a rare precedent for sportsmanship and fair play in Nigerian football.
The governor, accompanied by Enyimba Chairman and FIFA Ambassador Kanu Nwankwo, visited the Benin Arsenal in their dressing room after the match to present the financial reward. The gesture was widely praised as a demonstration of unity, respect, and love for the game.
Kanu, who led the governor to the visiting team, described the moment as one of camaraderie in football. Known for his humanitarian spirit, the former Super Eagles captain introduced Governor Otti to the Insurance players and officials with warm smiles, capping what had been a thrilling encounter in Aba.
Governor Otti has been vocal about his commitment to football development in Abia State, and his latest action further highlights his vision of using sport as a tool for peace, unity, and tourism growth.
The move has attracted commendation from across the football community, with many urging other state governors to follow his example in promoting fairness and supporting the growth of the domestic league.
