Lobi Stars U-19 secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Golden Boys of Abinsi in a thrilling friendly match at McCarthy Stadium today.
The game began with both sides creating chances, but it was the safe hands of Lobi Stars goalkeeper Aondona Gbamwuam that kept his team in contention, producing three vital saves.
Daniel Onu came close to opening the scoring with a powerful header that rattled the crossbar, while Benjamin Ishaya missed a clear one-on-one chance that could have put the visitors in front.
The breakthrough came when Moses Kuku was brought down inside the box, leading to a penalty that Onu calmly converted. Kuku then doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time with a well-placed header to give Lobi Stars a 2-0 cushion at the interval.
Golden Boys reduced the deficit early in the second half through Yohana Dauda’s clinical strike. The visitors pressed hard for an equaliser, but Lobi Stars stood firm. In the dying minutes, Jacob Detso had the opportunity to level from the spot, only to fire his penalty over the bar.
Head Coach Stephen Waghbo expressed satisfaction with his side’s display. He said: “Despite an early start, the lads showed great teamwork and coordination, dominating play and securing a well-deserved win. We are proud of their progress and will continue to guide them positively.”
Lobi Stars U-19 will continue their preparations with more friendly matches as they fine-tune tactics ahead of the upcoming championship playoff.
