Nigeria’s Super Eagles reignited their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 win against Rwanda on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
The decisive goal arrived in the 51st minute when striker Tolu Arokodare capitalised on a loose ball in the box and finished calmly past the Rwandan goalkeeper to seal all three points for Nigeria.
The first half saw few chances as both teams adopted a cautious approach. Nigeria’s defence, marshalled by Calvin Bassey, stood firm against Rwanda’s advances, particularly after the visitors adjusted their tactics following the restart.
The result came at a cost for Nigeria as Victor Osimhen was forced off injured before halftime, with Cyril Dessers replacing him. Despite the setback, Eric Chelle's side showed composure and determination to see out the game.
With this win, the Super Eagles strengthened their position in Group C and kept their qualification campaign on track as the race for the 2026 World Cup gathers pace.
