Rivers United secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Shooting Stars Sports Club in a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 4 clash at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt, on Sunday.
The decisive goal came in the 73rd minute through winger Ubong Friday, who latched onto Stephen Manyo’s clever flick from a Taiwo Abdulrafiu long throw to fire into the roof of the net. The strike ensured that the Pride of Rivers maintained their perfect home record this season.
The hosts started brightly, with Okon Aniekeme and Isaac Annor combining well on the right flank. Omaka Anthony, Boluwaji Sholumade and Seyi Oguntayo all went close, but Shooting Stars goalkeeper Godgift El-Kanah made a string of fine saves to keep the first half goalless.
Shooting Stars, who showed plenty of resilience, nearly stunned the home crowd after the restart when Wasiu unleashed a thunderous strike that rattled the crossbar in the 54th minute. The Oluyole Warriors continued to press forward through Promise Awosanmi and Ismail Ayodele, but they failed to convert their chances.
Coach Nurudeen Aweroro introduced fresh legs, with Justice replacing injured captain Gali Falke, while Monsoor, Chukwudi, and Jobi were sent on to strengthen the attack. The visitors had strong penalty appeals waved away in the 80th minute after Wasiu appeared to be brought down in the box. Despite late pressure and five minutes of added time, Rivers United held firm to claim all three points.
The result leaves Shooting Stars winless after four games, though they can draw positives from their improved organisation and determination. Their attention now turns to a home tie against Kun Khalifat FC in search of a first win of the campaign.
