Nigeria’s Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubairu, has explained how his team managed to contain a strong Colombian side and seal qualification for the Round of 16 at the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
The Flying Eagles battled to a hard-fought 1–1 draw in their final Group F match on Monday, a result that was enough to secure passage to the knockout stage.
Zubairu commended his players for their resilience and tactical discipline, noting that their structure and composure were key to neutralising Colombia’s physical and technical threats.
“It wasn’t easy, but we stood our ground and were proactive,” Zubairu said after the match. “We knew they are physically strong and good on the ball, so we tried to deny them passing lanes — that gave us a little edge. All we wanted was to qualify for the next round, and we’re not worried about who we have to face.”
After conceding early in the second half, Nigeria showed great character, responding with intensity and purpose. A late penalty earned them a crucial equaliser and the point they needed to advance.
The Flying Eagles’ defensive organisation and fighting spirit have drawn praise from fans and analysts, reflecting their growing confidence as the tournament progresses.
