Rivers United Receive Warm Welcome in Mozambique Ahead of CAF Champions League Tie



Rivers United FC were warmly received by the Nigerian community in Mozambique as they arrived for their CAF TotalEnergies Champions League second preliminary round clash against Black Bulls.

The team’s contingent, led by General Manager Chief Dr. Okey Kpalukwu, landed at Maputo International Airport on Thursday and was received by representatives of the Nigerian Ambassador to Mozambique. The players and officials were later hosted at the Nigerian Embassy in Maputo.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Mozambique, Mr. Aminu Abdulhamid, encouraged the team to give their all in representing the nation, pledging the embassy’s full support. He assured the players that the embassy doors would remain open to them throughout their stay and promised to mobilise the Nigerian community for strong support at the stadium.

Chief Dr. Okey Kpalukwu, who also serves as a board member of the NPFL and Chairman of the NPFL Club Owners Association, expressed gratitude to the Ambassador and the Nigerian community. He was joined by the Nigeria Football Federation’s representative, Dr. Ayo Abdulrahaman, in calling for continued backing as the team aims to make Nigeria proud.

Technical Manager Finidi George appreciated the warm welcome and promised that Rivers United would give their best to achieve a favourable result ahead of the return leg in Nigeria.

The Nigerian representatives will face Black Bulls on Saturday, 18 October, at the Estádio do Zimpeto in Maputo. Ambassador Abdulhamid has assured the team of massive support from Nigerians in Mozambique.

As a gesture of appreciation, Chief Dr. Kpalukwu presented Rivers United replica jerseys to the Ambassador and embassy officials.
