The Nigeria Women’s Football League has fined Ibom Angels FC ₦2.5 million and ordered the club to play three home matches behind closed doors following crowd disturbances during their Premiership clash against Bayelsa Queens in Uyo.
The sanctions were confirmed in a statement issued by the NWFL on Thursday, 8 January 2026, after a review of match officials’ reports and video evidence from the fixture played on 7 January at the Uyo Township Stadium, Akwa Ibom State.
According to the league, supporters of Ibom Angels invaded the pitch and assaulted players and officials of Bayelsa Queens, an act described as a serious breach of league regulations and the principles of fair play.
Ibom Angels were found guilty of multiple violations and fined a total of ₦2.5 million. The breakdown includes ₦1.5 million for breaching Article 26.1, which covers assault, intimidation and offensive conduct, and an additional ₦1 million for bringing the game into disrepute and failing to provide adequate security.
The NWFL also ruled that Ibom Angels must play their next three home fixtures without spectators in line with Article 16.4 of the league’s regulations.
Speaking on the decision, NWFL Chief Operating Officer Modupe Shabi stressed that the safety of players and officials remains a priority.
“The safety of players, officials and match personnel is non-negotiable,” Shabi said.
“What occurred in Uyo represents a serious breach of our regulations and the values of the NWFL. We will take stiffer actions against any club whose supporters engage in violence or conduct capable of bringing the league into disrepute.”
The affected matches to be played behind closed doors are Ibom Angels’ home fixtures against Ekiti Queens, Edo Queens and Naija Ratels, scheduled for January and February.
The league further warned that any failure to comply with the sanctions or a recurrence of similar incidents could result in more severe penalties, including extended venue bans.
