Kwara United have been fined nine million naira, deducted three points and three goals, and banished to Abeokuta for the rest of the season following breaches of league regulations.
The sanctions were issued after the club’s Matchday 22 rearranged fixture on Wednesday, 18 February 2026, at the Kwara State Stadium, Ilorin.
The Nigeria Premier Football League found Kwara United guilty of failing to provide adequate and effective security, which resulted in unauthorised persons gaining access to restricted areas.
The club also failed to ensure proper conduct of their supporters, leading to the harassment and injury of match officials and officials of Rivers United.
Supporters reportedly gained access to restricted zones and assaulted match officials and Rivers United officials, causing bodily harm and bringing the game into disrepute through unsporting behaviour.
Breakdown of Sanctions
Kwara United were fined:
- N2 million for failing to provide adequate and effective security
- N1 million for failing to ensure proper conduct of supporters
- N2 million for assault on match officials and Rivers United officials
- N1 million for unsporting behaviour capable of bringing the game into disrepute
- N1 million for holding match officials and Rivers United officials hostage after the match
- N2 million as compensatory costs for treatment and damages
The total financial penalty amounts to N9 million.
In addition, three points and three goals have been deducted from the club’s accumulated tally for assaults on match officials.
The club will now play their remaining home matches at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta until the end of the season.
Kwara United have also been directed to identify and present the supporters involved in the assault for arrest and prosecution, with proof of compliance required.
The club have 48 hours from the date of notice to appeal the sanctions.
