Akwa United head coach Paul Offor has urged his players to maintain a “top mentality” as they prepare for a crucial Matchday 15 derby against Godswill Akpabio United FC at the Uyo Township Stadium on Thursday.
The Promise Keepers, who lead NNL Conference B with 28 points, are targeting all three points to strengthen their promotion push. Despite being listed as the away side, Akwa United return to a familiar venue where they remain unbeaten this season and have conceded just once.
Offor expressed satisfaction with his squad’s preparation and highlighted their steady improvement.
“Our game against Godswill Akpabio FC is a very important one for us. I am very happy with the character and attitude the players have shown in training ahead of this match,” he said.
The reverse fixture ended 1-1 after a dramatic stoppage time exchange, but Offor believes his side are better equipped heading into this encounter.
“I have watched us improve with every game, especially here in Uyo. Going into this match, we have conceded only one goal here,” he added.
The Akwa United boss emphasised the need to treat the fixture with a home mentality despite the technical designation.
“We have to approach this game like it is a home game for us. That is the mentality I want to see. We have to give the fans a reason to cheer.”
With just four matches left in the campaign, victory would extend Akwa United’s four-point lead at the top and boost their chances of securing promotion.
“I want us to maintain a top mentality so we can come out with three points, which will be crucial to us achieving our objective this season,” Offor said.
He also called on supporters to turn out in large numbers, with no gate fee announced for the derby.
“The fans have been amazing this season, and I expect them to come out again and cheer the boys to victory on Thursday.”
