Rivers United right-back Ebuka Akobundu has praised the club’s management for their strong commitment to player welfare following his return from a lengthy injury layoff.
Akobundu returned to action on 4 March 2026 after spending 378 days on the sidelines due to injury.
The defender suffered a recurrence of an injury during a match against Akwa United in Uyo in February 2025, which required surgery and a long rehabilitation period.
Rivers United covered the cost of the surgery and treatment, reportedly exceeding five million naira, while continuing to support the player throughout his recovery.
Akobundu expressed appreciation to the club’s management, technical crew, teammates and staff for standing by him during the difficult period.
“I am delighted to be back, and I extend my sincere appreciation to God and the management of the team,” Akobundu said.
“They have been a constant source of support, and I am grateful for their unwavering commitment to my recovery.”
The club’s leadership, headed by Chief Dr Okey Kpalukwu, has maintained a policy of supporting players during difficult periods.
