Abia State Acting Football Association Chairman, Okechi Ubani, has expressed deep sorrow over the heartbreaking loss of 21 young athletes from Kano State who died in a tragic road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
In an official condolence message, Ubani extended heartfelt sympathies to the government and people of Kano State, describing the tragedy as a devastating blow not only to Kano but to the entire Nigerian sports community.
“The National Sports Festival is meant to be a celebration of talent, unity, and national pride. This loss has cast a dark shadow over what should have been a moment of joy,” Ubani said.
He acknowledged the pain being endured by the families, friends, and teammates of the deceased athletes, noting that they died in pursuit of their dreams and passion for sports. “Their lives were cut short far too soon. We will always remember them for their dedication, hard work, and the pride they brought to their state and nation,” he added.
Ubani called on all sports bodies and stakeholders across Nigeria to unite in support of the affected families and to ensure such tragedies do not recur. He emphasized the need for improved safety protocols and transportation arrangements for athletes during national events.
“Let this be a wake-up call. We must prioritize the safety of our athletes and do all we can to prevent future occurrences. These young talents deserved better,” Ubani stated.
He concluded by honoring the memory of the athletes, saying their names will remain etched in Nigerian sports history as true champions. “On behalf of the Abia State Football Association, I pray for the souls of the departed and stand in solidarity with Kano State during this time of profound grief.”
