The Gboko Football Referee Society has joined the growing call for an end to the persistent killings in Benue State, lending their voices—quite literally—to the cry for peace.
Led by its chairman, Mr Atile Ver Gideon, members of the referee body marched alongside thousands of Benue youths in a peaceful demonstration, demanding urgent action from authorities to stop the bloodshed that continues to plague the state.
In a symbolic gesture, the referees brought their whistles to the protest, using them not to officiate a match, but to signal a call for justice and peace.
“We don’t have the powers,” Mr Ver said, “but we are lending our voices through the whistle, just as we do while playing the game of football. We hope that our voices, joined with those of the thousands of Benue youths, will be heard.”
Mr Ver also expressed his condolences to the families affected by the most recent attacks, particularly the massacre in Yelewata, and to all who have lost loved ones in the ongoing violence.
The presence of the Gboko Football Referee Society highlights the increasing involvement of all sectors—including the sporting community—in pushing for peace, unity, and security across Benue.
