The Flying Eagles of Nigeria have advanced to the final of the WAFU U-20 Tournament in Ivory Coast after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win over Niger Republic.
The match ended goalless in regulation time despite Nigeria dominating proceedings under the guidance of coach Aliyu Zubairu. However, the team failed to convert their chances, taking the contest into penalties.
The Nigerian goalkeeper was the hero of the shootout, pulling off decisive saves to guide his side to victory. It marks the Flying Eagles’ second consecutive appearance in the final of the regional competition.
Nigeria will now face the winners of the semi-final clash between hosts Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana in the final.
The Flying Eagles are aiming to retain their title, having defeated Ghana in the final of the previous edition. The WAFU U-20 Tournament also serves as an important build-up to the FIFA U-20 World Cup scheduled to take place in Chile later this year.
With their place in the final secured, Nigeria will be looking to maintain their momentum and continue preparations for the global tournament.
