Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has rewarded players and officials of Bayelsa Queens FC with millions of naira following their victory in the 2024/25 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership.
At the 167th Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, Governor Diri announced a cash reward of ₦4 million each for the 26 active players who featured in the successful campaign. Players who were registered but did not feature received ₦1 million each.
In addition, the head coach was awarded ₦4 million, the club chairman ₦3 million, assistant coaches ₦2 million each, backroom staff ₦1.5 million each, and board members ₦1 million each. The supporters club was also given ₦3 million in recognition of their unwavering support throughout the season.
Receiving the NWFL trophy from the team, Governor Diri said, “Your Prosperity Government is happy with you and has decided to reward you for your outstanding performance winning the NWFL Premiership title.”
He further charged the team to represent Nigeria proudly in the upcoming WAFU Zone B competition, noting, “You are not only representing Bayelsa State but the whole of Nigeria, and you all know the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a sports-loving president. I urge you to come back home with the trophy.”
Governor Diri also directed an upward review of salaries for players of the state-owned male and female football teams. He appreciated Premium Trust Bank for their sponsorship and called on more corporate bodies to embrace corporate social responsibility by supporting sports development in the state.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr. Daniel Igali, commended the Governor’s continued support and highlighted the individual honours won by team members. Monle Omini was named Best Goalkeeper of the Season, Oyinkuro Frank received Best Goalkeeper Coach, and Whyte Ogbonda was honoured as Best Coach of the Season.
In a further show of appreciation, Premium Trust Bank rewarded the players and technical crew with ₦2 million.
Bayelsa Queens' league triumph and financial rewards reflect a continued rise in women's football in Nigeria, with the team now turning its focus to regional glory.
