Enyimba U19 reignited their NPFL Youth League campaign with a disciplined 2-0 victory over Rivers United U19 at the Isiala Ngwa Stadium, showing composure and quality in decisive moments.
The Young Elephants entered the match with urgency after a 3-2 loss to Lobi Stars U19 in their opening fixture. They began brightly, creating early chances. In the 4th minute, Kelechi Mba’s header forced a sharp save from the Rivers United goalkeeper, while Peter Daniel fired straight at the keeper from a promising position six minutes later.
The first half remained evenly balanced, with both sides battling for midfield control. Enyimba’s defensive organisation was impressive, and goalkeeper Eze Mathew confidently dealt with Rivers United’s attacking efforts.
The breakthrough came in the 66th minute when Chimela’s long free kick was parried by the goalkeeper, allowing Emmanuel Chinedu to pounce on the rebound for the opener. Rivers United pressed for an equaliser, but Mathew produced a vital fingertip save to protect the lead.
Enyimba sealed the win in the 80th minute through a moment of brilliance from Nelson Sule, who met a loose ball just outside the penalty area with a precise volley that flew past the goalkeeper.
The Young Elephants controlled possession in the closing stages, limiting Rivers United to half chances. The win keeps their hopes alive in Group B and sets up a decisive clash against Rangers U19 in the race for knockout qualification.
