Nigeria’s hopes in the ongoing tournament came to a crushing end on Tuesday night as Sudan secured a commanding 4-0 victory in Zanzibar, eliminating the Super Eagles with a game to spare.
The encounter turned sour for Nigeria early on when Leonard Ngenge put the ball into his own net, gifting Sudan the opener. Walieldin Khdir then doubled the lead from the penalty spot, leaving the Eagles with a mountain to climb before the break.
Any hopes of a comeback were extinguished in the second half as Abdel Raouf Yagoub struck twice to complete a brace and compound Nigeria’s misery.
Sudan’s head coach, Kwesi Appiah, praised his team’s display, describing it as “disciplined” and “ruthless”. The result cements Sudan’s place in the next round while Nigeria are left to reflect on a campaign that ended in disappointment.
