Umuakuru Emekuku in Owerri North Local Government Area came alive as the Prof. M.A. Nze/Oluchi Ekwueme Soccer Academy was officially unveiled at the Community Secondary School pitch along Nkwo Emeke Road.
From the early hours, the community brimmed with excitement. Traders, schoolchildren, elders, and football-loving youths thronged the pitch, waving flags, drumming, and singing in celebration of what many described as the dawn of a new football era for the area. For grassroots supporters, the academy’s launch represented more than football; it symbolised opportunity, empowerment, and pride.
The event attracted notable dignitaries and sports stakeholders. Representing the Imo State Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, was Greg Okey Nwadike, who described the academy as “a game-changer for grassroots football.” Members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Imo Chapter, former footballers, and a lively crowd filled the venue with chants and applause.
A major highlight of the day was a friendly clash between the academy’s senior team and Hawks FC. The thrilling 1–1 draw showcased raw talent, hunger, and youthful passion, convincing fans that the academy has the potential to produce future stars.
Co-founder Oluchi Ekwueme, a former professional footballer and member of the renowned Ekwueme football family, expressed her excitement and vision for the project.
“This is more than football; it is a vision we have carried in our hearts for years,” she said. “Our mission is to harness young talents, nurture them, and project them to the world. With Prof. Nze’s commitment and my experience, we are confident of raising the stars of tomorrow.”
Adding colour to the launch, Anayo Udogu, popularly known as Dodomayana, and Senegal Eto’o donated footballs and cones to the academy. They pledged their unwavering support, promising to stand by the academy in its journey to nurture and empower young talents.
As the celebrations drew to a close, it was clear that the launch marked the beginning of a new chapter for grassroots football in Emekuku. The Nze/Ekwueme Soccer Academy now sets out on a mission to inspire hope and produce the next generation of Nigerian football legends.
