Aba witnessed a carnival-like atmosphere on Sunday as Enyimba International FC hosted Niger Tornadoes in a Matchday 2 clash of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season at the Enyimba Stadium.
The encounter, already a much-anticipated fixture, turned into a spectacle of glamour and support as Nigerian business mogul and nightlife king, Hon. Obi Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, graced the stadium alongside his high-profile entourage.
The move was orchestrated by Enyimba Chairman and Nigerian football legend, Ambassador Nwankwo Kanu, who has been actively rallying prominent figures to support the nine-time NPFL champions. Fresh from securing backing from Igbo businessmen in Kano for the season opener, Kanu’s latest coup saw Obi Cubana and his team storm Aba in grand style.
The entourage included MC Cogency (MC Ndi Eriwa), Timaya Anyaso (CEO of Xclusive by Cubana), Mr Ola Bidemi, and Hon. Janson Eke (CEO of Jiga Pop), among others. Cubana, welcomed with a thunderous ovation, was officially unveiled in a customised Enyimba jersey to the delight of the home crowd.
In a show of commitment, the Anambra-born billionaire pledged N1 million for every goal scored by the People’s Elephant, a promise that seemed to inspire the players. Enyimba responded with a spirited display, sealing a 1-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes courtesy of a first-half header from debutant Joseph Abiodun.
“This is more than football; it is culture, it is unity, and it is support for our own,” Obi Cubana said after the match. “Enyimba is our pride, and we must all come together to push them to greater heights.”
For Enyimba fans, the presence of one of Nigeria’s biggest business icons was more than just a morale boost. It was a clear statement that under Kanu’s leadership, the club is blending football excellence with strategic partnerships, reigniting hopes of returning the People’s Elephant to the summit of African football.
