Niger Tornadoes head coach Majin Mohammed praised his players’ effort despite their late 1-0 defeat to Bendel Insurance in Benin on Saturday.
The Ikon Allah Boys looked set to earn a point until Israel Emmanuel struck in the 93rd minute, heading home from a throw-in to secure victory for the hosts.
Reflecting on the game, Mohammed admitted the loss was painful but defended his side’s attacking approach.
“The boys did their best, but it was not good enough and in football, sometimes, you win, draw or lose,” he said. “We did not set out to defend. In fact, it is not in our character to go to away games and start defending, but today, we were not lucky.”
The visitors had their chances, with Shamagande’s weak header in the 52nd minute easily gathered by the goalkeeper, while Sarki’s 77th-minute effort from Abba Khalid’s cross went just over the bar.
Mohammed confirmed the team would quickly regroup ahead of their next fixture. “We will go back home, look at the lapses, work on them and win our next home game,” he added.
Niger Tornadoes now prepare to host Ikorodu City in their upcoming Nigeria Premier Football League clash.
