The Nigeria National League (NNL) has introduced a major reform by abolishing the Super 8 playoff, opting instead for a direct qualification format that will see the top four teams from each conference secure automatic promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The decision, unanimously endorsed by club owners during the league’s 15th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Kaduna on Tuesday, marks a new era for the country’s second-tier football.
According to NNL officials, the move is aimed at creating a fairer and more transparent pathway for promotion while reducing the controversies and logistical challenges that previously accompanied the playoff system. “This decision reflects the collective will of stakeholders to prioritise merit and consistency,” one executive stated, noting that the new structure would encourage healthy competition across conferences.
The NNL also confirmed that the 2025/2026 season will kick off on 8 November 2025. All 36 clubs are required to complete licensing procedures and player registrations ahead of the opening fixtures.
Football analysts have praised the development, describing it as a step towards aligning the NNL with global best practices and easing the financial strain on clubs once burdened by travel and playoff expenses.
With promotion now tied strictly to league standings, teams are expected to focus on long-term planning and competitive consistency. The NNL leadership assured fans that the upcoming season will feature quality football, improved organisation, and a stronger platform for the growth of Nigerian football.
As preparations gather pace, attention turns to the 36 participating clubs who will battle for success in what promises to be a fiercely contested campaign.
