CAF Champions League: Sundowns Thrash Remo Stars 5–1 in Abeokuta

South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns produced a stunning display on Sunday, thrashing Nigeria’s Remo Stars 5–1 away in Abeokuta in the first leg of their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2025/26 second preliminary round tie.

The visitors wasted no time asserting their dominance, with Tashreeq Matthews opening the scoring early before Peter Shalulile doubled the lead before the break. Miguel Reisinho added a third in the 61st minute, while Arthur Sales and Tsiki Ntsabeleng rounded off the rout to complete a five-star performance.

Remo Stars managed a consolation goal through Samson Olasupo in the 77th minute, but it was not enough to trouble the rampant Brazilians.

The emphatic victory puts Miguel Cardoso’s men in full control of the tie ahead of the return leg in Pretoria, where they are expected to confirm their progression to the group stage as they chase a second continental title.

Elsewhere, the weekend’s fixtures across Eswatini, DR Congo, and Cameroon saw mixed results, with seasoned contenders like Simba SC and St Éloi Lupopo securing commanding wins, while MC Alger earned a valuable away draw.
