Canada began their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2025 campaign in dominant fashion, defeating Nigeria 4–1 at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Salé on Sunday.
The North Americans struck early, as Gabriela Istocki finished off a surging run from Molly Hale on the left just two minutes into the match. Nigeria responded with determination, controlling possession and mounting pressure through the midfield.
Flamingos captain Shakirat Moshood came close twice within the opening 15 minutes, first testing goalkeeper Khadijah Cisse with a long-range strike before sending a volley narrowly over the bar. Chisom Nwachukwu also drew a fine save from Cisse as Nigeria continued to press.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 30th minute when Queen Joseph tapped in from close range after Cisse failed to hold onto Kaosarat Olanrewaju’s shot, bringing the Flamingos level in an entertaining first half.
However, Canada took full control after the break. Substitute Melisa Kekic restored their lead in the 73rd minute, calmly slotting past Nigerian goalkeeper Elizabeth Boniface after beating her marker. Julia Amireh extended the advantage seven minutes later, capitalising on another handling error before completing her brace in the 86th minute with a composed finish.
Despite a bright first half, Nigeria struggled to match Canada’s intensity after the restart. The Flamingos will look to recover when they take on France in their second Group D fixture on Wednesday.
