Coach Ogbonda Hails Bayelsa Queens’ Composure in Dramatic Win

Bayelsa Queens head coach Whyte Ogbonda has praised his players for maintaining their composure as the reigning Nigeria Women’s Football League champions secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Edo Queens at the Samson Siasia Stadium.

Edo Queens took the lead in the 23rd minute when Adegbemile Rebecca headed home from a corner. Bayelsa Queens levelled just before the break through Kindness Chinaza, who struck in the 44th minute to send both sides into half-time on equal terms.

The Prosperity Girls resumed strongly and took the lead just a minute into the second half through Janet Akekoromowei’s precise finish. Edo Queens, however, pushed back and equalised in added time when Nwachukwu Adanna scored in the 90th minute after a brief moment of uncertainty before the goal was confirmed.

Bayelsa Queens restored their advantage deep into stoppage time. Captain Blessing Ilivieda converted from the penalty spot in the 97th minute after an Edo Queens defender handled the ball inside the area.

Speaking after the match, Coach Whyte Ogbonda said his side expected a difficult contest and praised his players for sticking to the game plan. “It was a tough game as we expected, but I give kudos to my girls for keeping their cool and playing according to plan,” he said.

Ogbonda added that the club has clear ambitions for the season. “We have laudable plans for this season and we will try and execute them as each game comes. For today’s game, it was not an easy one but we are happy we won,” he said.
