Rivers United secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Nasarawa United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Sunday, thanks to a brilliant goal from Timothy Zachariah.
The Pride of Rivers, led by Finidi George, began with high intensity and were rewarded just before the break when Zachariah fired home a stunning volley from 20 yards after a fine assist from Tawio AbdulRafiu. Earlier, captain Ubong Friday had seen his effort cleared off the line in the 38th minute, but Zachariah’s strike in the 44th minute proved decisive.
The win moves Rivers United to eighth position on the Nigeria Premier Football League table with 16 points from nine matches, and two games in hand. The Port Harcourt side have now recorded their fourth win of the season and will next travel to Benin for a rescheduled fixture against Bendel Insurance.
For Nasarawa United, the defeat marked their second consecutive loss in as many weeks and their third of the season. The Solid Miners, who were cheered on by the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, slipped to second place on the log with 19 points, two behind Abia Warriors.
Head coach Mangut Mbwas expressed disappointment with the outcome but praised his team’s effort.
“It’s unfortunate that the game turned out this way,” Mbwas said. “We knew it would be difficult here against Rivers United. The wet pitch affected our play, but I commend my boys for their effort and congratulate Rivers United for taking their chance.”
Nasarawa United will look to bounce back when they face Remo Stars in an outstanding match-day ten fixture on Thursday at the Lafia City Stadium before hosting Kwara United on match-day twelve.
