Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has refused to be drawn into questions about his contract, insisting his full attention is on Nigeria’s opening match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday ahead of Nigeria’s Group C clash against Tanzania, Chelle made it clear that discussions surrounding his contract status are not a priority during the tournament.
The coach stressed the importance of starting the competition strongly, describing the opening fixture as crucial to Nigeria’s ambitions.
“For this game, we are very happy to be here,” Chelle said. “It is a big game because it is our first match, and the first game is always very important. We are pleased to be playing here in Fez, and of course, we are working very hard to win this match.”
Chelle added that his approach to the job has always been centred on the present, rather than future negotiations or personal matters.
“Since I started this job, I have always approached it as if it could end after each match,” he said. “Right now, my focus is entirely on the AFCON, my players, and the officials. After the tournament, by God’s grace, when we have reason to smile, we can then talk about my contract. This is not the best time for such questions.”
The Super Eagles coach also urged the media to focus on football matters, particularly the team’s preparation and performance at the tournament.
“I want us, the media, to ask questions about the players, the tournament, and the team as a whole, not about my contract,” Chelle stated.
Nigeria, three-time African champions, will face Tanzania on Tuesday night in Fez, with kick-off scheduled for 6:30 pm Nigerian time. Group C rivals Tunisia and Uganda will also meet later the same evening at the same venue.
