Silva’s Last-Gasp Strike Denies Zamalek Victory in CAF Confederation Cup Thriller

Substitute Silva struck deep into stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw for Kaizer Chiefs against Zamalek in a tense TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup Group D match at FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Zamalek took an early lead in the third minute when Seifeddine Jaziri expertly finished a swift attacking move, putting the 2023/24 champions ahead.

The Egyptian side then focused on controlling the game, using their experience to disrupt Chiefs’ rhythm with tactical substitutions and cautious play as the match progressed.

Despite their defensive approach, Zamalek remained dangerous on the counterattack but picked up several bookings while trying to protect their slender lead.

Kaizer Chiefs’ determination paid off in the sixth minute of added time when Silva found space in a crowded penalty area to fire home the equaliser, sparking celebrations among the home fans.

The draw leaves Group D tightly contested behind leaders Al Masry, who claimed a 3-2 win away to ZESCO United on Friday, moving to six points from two games.

Zamalek sit second with four points, Chiefs third with one, and ZESCO bottom without a point.
