Wydad Athletic Club secured their second consecutive victory in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup group stage with a hard-fought 1-0 win away at Azam FC in Zanzibar. The result keeps the Moroccan side firmly on top of Group B.
The only goal came in the 57th minute when veteran Nordin Amrabat calmly finished a well-crafted move. Wydad increased their pressure early in the second half, and Amrabat’s experience proved decisive in breaking the deadlock.
The first half was a tight affair with few clear chances as both teams cancelled each other out. Azam pressed aggressively after their opening match defeat and sought to exploit the flanks. However, Wydad’s defence remained disciplined and limited the hosts mainly to long-range efforts.
After the break, Wydad raised their tempo and began controlling possession more effectively. Their sharper passing and movement pinned Azam deep in their own half. When Amrabat found the net, it was a reward for the visitors’ increased urgency.
Azam pushed forward in search of an equaliser during the final 20 minutes, posing threats from set pieces and crosses. Yet Wydad’s defenders stood firm, clearing aerial dangers and closing passing lanes in midfield.
In the closing stages, Wydad managed the game intelligently by maintaining possession in Azam’s half and slowing the pace to protect their lead.
With six points from two games, Wydad underline their credentials as early favourites to top Group B. Azam remain pointless after two defeats and face a tough challenge to revive their quarter-final ambitions.
Group B action resumes this weekend with Nairobi United hosting Maniema Union in a key clash behind the leaders. On this showing, Wydad’s combination of experience and control looks formidable on the road.
