AFCON 2025: Algerian players attack referee after 2-0 loss to Nigeria [Video]

Algerian players and officials confronted referee Isaa Sy following their 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in the quarter-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Tensions flared immediately after the final whistle as players of the Desert Foxes surrounded the match official on the pitch. Sy was later escorted into the dressing room for his safety after clashes broke out between Algerian supporters and stadium security.

The situation worsened in the tunnel, where Algerian players and officials continued to harass the referee, forcing match officials to intervene.

Sources close to the game revealed that the Algerian camp were unhappy with several decisions taken by Sy during the encounter, although no official complaint has been confirmed.

Nigeria secured the victory through second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams, sealing a place in the semi-finals where the Super Eagles will face tournament hosts Morocco.

The Confederation of African Football is yet to issue an official statement on the post-match incident.
