The Confederation of African Football has removed Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan from officiating the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 quarter-final clash between Nigeria and Algeria.
CAF reportedly took the decision after discovering that Artan wore boots from a brand not approved by the tournament’s official sponsors during an earlier match at the competition.
The action was deemed a breach of CAF regulations, prompting the governing body to withdraw the official from the highly anticipated last-eight encounter.
Artan had been appointed to handle the fixture despite recently being named Referee of the Year at the 2025 CAF Awards held in Rabat, Morocco.
CAF is now expected to announce a replacement referee ahead of the quarter-final showdown.
The Super Eagles will face the Desert Foxes at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on Saturday.
