Nasarawa United assistant coach Moga Stephen has described his side’s 1-1 draw against Bayelsa United as heartbreaking, admitting that dropped points are hurting their Nigeria Premier Football League title ambitions.
The Solid Miners were held at the Lafia City Stadium on Sunday evening despite taking an early lead through Victor Peter’s seventh-minute own goal. Energy Otunuya equalised for the visitors in the 32nd minute to ensure both sides shared the spoils.
United thought they had won it late on after goalmouth scrambles, but the referee ruled that the whole ball did not cross the line. A penalty appeal was also waved away.
Reacting after the match, Stephen expressed frustration over consecutive stalemates.
“It’s heartbreaking to draw again, after the stalemates we picked at home against Enyimba before the one against Wikki Tourists in Bauchi. We have dropped six points in nine consecutive games, which is not good for our title ambition,” he said.
The assistant coach, however, insisted the team can recover.
“This isn’t actually what we wanted. However, I believe we can recalibrate and bounce back to victory status again.
“We are a team, and we work collectively to achieve results. We don’t rely on any single player to do the magic alone.”
Stephen also called on supporters to remain behind the team as the title race intensifies.
“We call on our loyal and faithful supporters and fans to keep supporting us to achieve success in the league.”
Nasarawa United are third on the table with 41 points, level with Ikorodu City and Rivers United, who both have games in hand.
The Solid Miners will travel to face Katsina United on matchday 26 before returning home to host Bendel Insurance.
