Heartland Technical Manager Emmanuel Amuneke says securing all three points was the most important outcome after his side defeated Smart City FC 3–1 in their Nigeria National League Conference A fixture at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.
Francis Erikan gave the Naze Millionaires an early advantage with a goal just two minutes after kick off. Jonathan Osondu extended Heartland’s lead in the 21st minute.
Smart City pulled one back just before half time to keep the contest alive, but Ali Sunday restored Heartland’s two goal lead in the 70th minute to seal victory.
The result also served as revenge for Heartland, who lost 2–1 to the Lagos based side in the first round earlier in the season.
The win lifts Heartland to third place in the Conference A standings with 17 points after 13 matches. Inter Lagos lead the table with 24 points, while Beyond Limits sit second with 23 points.
Amuneke said the priority for his side was securing maximum points.
“The important thing is not what worked or what did not work for us. The main target was to get the three points and we were able to achieve that,” Amuneke said.
“If we can score more goals to improve our goal advantage, it will be good for us. We know Smart City is a good side because we played them in Lagos in the first round and lost 1–2.
“They are a team you must not give space to operate. But every game is different. Our idea was clear to get the three points.”
The former Nigeria international also stressed the importance of managing difficult moments during matches.
“We know there will be moments when we will not have possession of the ball. What matters is how we react and manage those moments to achieve what we want.
“It is unfortunate we conceded because we would have loved a 3–0 result. But we are satisfied with what we got. This team is still a work in progress and this league is very tough.”
Amuneke also warned his players against underestimating Sunshine Stars ahead of their next home game.
“We cannot say because we are Heartland and begin to underestimate opponents. We just have to do our work and hopefully next week against Sunshine Stars we will continue to get maximum points at home and see how the journey unfolds.”
Both Heartland and Sunshine Stars were relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League last season, and Amuneke expects a difficult contest.
“They are a very good side. Both teams were in the Premier League last season and both want to return to the top flight.
“We will keep pushing and working. My objective is to encourage the players and help them understand the game better so they can make the best decisions on the pitch.”
