The Nigeria Premier Football League has approved the relocation of Kwara United’s home matches from the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta to the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.
The decision followed a request from the Ilorin club as they continue to serve an indefinite stadium ban which requires them to play their home games outside Ilorin for the rest of the season.
The sanction was imposed after incidents involving unacceptable behaviour from fans during their rescheduled Matchday 23 fixture against Rivers United.
Kwara United explained that the move was necessary to ensure sporting fairness. The club noted that Remo Stars, another Ogun State based side, are also involved in the battle to avoid relegation, raising concerns that rival supporters could create unrest that might be blamed on Kwara United as the host team.
The club has now adopted the Mobolaji Johnson Arena as their temporary home ground.
Approval for the relocation was confirmed in a letter from the NPFL signed by the league’s Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi.
Kwara United will begin life at their new venue with a Matchday 30 fixture against Rangers International scheduled for Sunday, March 15.
