Enyimba Football Club have announced the appointment of former Super Eagles defender and club legend, Uche Okechukwu, as their new Sporting Director.
The Aba giants confirmed the development in an official statement, describing the former international, fondly known as the “Gentle Giant,” as a key addition to the club’s leadership structure.
Okechukwu’s appointment follows the resignation of the club’s previous Sporting Director, with Enyimba’s chairman expressing confidence in the ex-defender’s ability to bring experience, integrity and deep football knowledge into the role.
The club believe his understanding of football administration, elite competition and player development will support Enyimba’s long-term sporting vision and help restore them to the summit of domestic and continental football.
Okechukwu enjoyed an illustrious playing career, starring in Europe for Denmark’s Brøndby IF and Turkish giants Fenerbahçe, where he earned widespread respect for his leadership and defensive excellence.
He also featured locally for Enyimba, Flash Flamingoes FC and Iwuanyanwu National FC, winning laurels during his time in Nigerian football.
On the international stage, he was a key member of Nigeria’s golden generation, helping the Super Eagles win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia before featuring at the country’s first FIFA World Cup appearance in the United States later that year.
He further cemented his legacy in 1996, when he was one of the over-aged players in Nigeria’s celebrated Olympic squad that won football gold in Atlanta.
Enyimba’s management, players, staff and supporters have welcomed Okechukwu back to the club, expressing optimism about a new era of progress and sustained success under his guidance.
