Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has sent a message of support to Morocco forward Brahim Diaz following his missed penalty in the Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal.
Diaz failed to convert from the spot during Sunday’s final, a moment that proved costly as Senegal edged the hosts to claim the continental title.
Speaking in his AFCON Diaries series, Iwobi noted that the Real Madrid winger was only inches away from being celebrated as a national hero.
“A shoutout to Brahim Diaz. He will be going through a lot,” Iwobi said. “To take the penalty the way he did, if he scored, he would have been a hero. It is just the fact that he did not.”
The Fulham midfielder urged fans to show understanding, describing penalty misses as part of the game.
“Please, it is football, allow him,” Iwobi added. “What is done is done. He had a good tournament. Do your thing in your club.”
Despite the disappointment of the final, Diaz ended the tournament on a high, finishing as the Africa Cup of Nations top scorer to claim the Golden Boot.
